A major highlight was the discussion on diagnostic strategies: as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/oral-iron-iron-deficiency-imcid-2025-interview-ioav-cabantchik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasized by Swinkels and Cabantchik<\/a>, no single test reliably quantifies iron availability in all scenarios. Instead, clinicians must consider the full clinical picture alongside laboratory results to make informed decisions.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><em>The course also delivered key updates across clinical fields<\/em><\/em>:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/clinical-research\/cardiovascular-area\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardiology<\/a><\/strong>, <em>studies showed how myocardial iron modulation by empagliflozin might explain its benefit in heart failure (HF), while oral <strong>Sucrosomial\u00ae Iron (SI)<\/strong> proved as effective as IV ferric carboxymaltose (FCM), even outperforming FeSO\u2084 in cardiac function restoration (Vinci). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/sucrosomial-iron-featured-in-the-world-health-organization-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><em>Sucrosomial\u00ae Iron <\/em><\/em>has now been included in the <strong>WHO 2025 PBM implementation guidelines<\/strong><\/a> as a potential cost-saving oral alternative for non-anaemic iron deficiency in HF patients<\/em><\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/clinical-research\/gastroenterology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gastroenterology<\/a><\/strong>, <em>oral SI improved haemoglobin and iron stores in ulcerative colitis (Bertani) and demonstrated positive effects on gut microbiota and inflammation (Frazer)<\/em>.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>In <\/em><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/iron-deficiency-oncology-interview-sandro-barni-imcid-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oncology<\/a><\/em><\/strong><em>, l<em>both preventive and proactive iron supplementation were shown to be more cost-effective than reactive IV treatments. New hypotheses also explored ferroptosis-targeting agents and iron-bound antibiotics as novel strategies for cancer and resistant infections<\/em>.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/clinical-research\/internal-medicine-and-geriatrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Internal Medicine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/clinical-research\/haematology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Haematology<\/a><\/strong>, <em>SI demonstrated efficacy equal or superior to traditional oral formulations with fewer GI side effects. A sublingual route also showed promise for patients with neurological swallowing disorders<\/em>.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/clinical-research\/gynaecology-and-obstetrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gynaecology and Obstetrics<\/a><\/strong>, <em>high-dose SI was well tolerated postpartum and effective in surgical settings like uterine fibroid ablation<\/em>.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>In <strong>Paediatrics<\/strong>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/iron-supplementation-in-preterm-infants-interview-dr-san-nan-yang-imcid-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><em>Sucrosomial\u00ae Iron <\/em><\/em>was shown to support preterm infants<\/a> and children with celiac disease or anaemia, even at lower doses than iron polymaltose<\/em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the latest PBM protocols for surgical patients, and how is iron integrated into them?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>PBM is evolving into a broader concept of <strong>&#8220;blood health&#8221;<\/strong>, as it becomes integrated into daily patient care. Yet, perioperative anaemia remains a challenge. At IMCID, we presented a <strong>Spanish consensus clinical pathway<\/strong> designed to clarify who, when, how, and with what to treat perioperative anaemia. This structured approach aims to overcome existing barriers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Additionally, two new guidelines were highlighted:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The <strong>2024 AECTS\/AECTAIC PBM Guidelines<\/strong> for adult cardiac surgery<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The <strong>2023 UK Centre for Perioperative Care Anemia Guideline<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>These guidelines emphasize timely diagnosis and treatment, including iron supplementation<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did IMCID highlight any major shifts in preoperative anaemia treatment that could influence clinical practice?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Absolutely. All three guidelines recommend iron supplementation for preoperative IDA. The <strong>Spanish clinical pathway<\/strong>, based on data from multiple surgical fields (cardiac, vascular, orthopaedic, bariatric, gynaecological), recommends <strong>Sucrosomial\u00ae Iron<\/strong> as an effective and cost-efficient alternative to IV iron\u2014especially when IV administration is contraindicated or logistically difficult.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In <strong>cardiac surgery<\/strong>, IMCID data confirmed the effectiveness of SI in pre- and postoperative IDA management (Weltert, Venturini), leading to its <strong>Class IIa recommendation<\/strong> in the 2024 AECTS\/AECTAIC guidelines.Notably, the 2023 <strong>UK CPOC anaemia guideline<\/strong> published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia referred to Sucrosomial\u00aeIron as \u201can exciting development that could change the landscape of anaemia treatment,\u201d praising its tolerance at high doses, independence from ferroprotein pathways, and resistance to hepcidin regulation&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>From diagnostics to treatment protocols, IMCID 2025 reinforced the value of integrating iron supplementation \u2014 particularly oral alternatives \u2014 within <strong>modern Patient Blood Management strategies<\/strong>.
