Beyond promoting <strong>calcium deposition in bones<\/strong> \u2014 ensuring their strength and density \u2014 it also enhances the <strong>absorption of phosphorus<\/strong>, a key mineral for skeletal health.<br>In recent years, multiple studies have highlighted the<strong> pivotal role of vitamin D in supporting immune defenses and overall wellbeing<\/strong>.\u00b9 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To exert its biological effects, vitamin D binds to specific receptors (VDRs) distributed across many tissues, activating crucial cellular processes.\u00b2<br>Despite its synthesis through ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure, several factors \u2014 such as age, use of sunscreen, skin pigmentation, latitude, and sedentary lifestyle \u2014 can significantly limit endogenous production. Consequently, <strong>vitamin D deficiency has become a widespread global public health concern<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vitamin D Metabolism <\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"482\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Metabolismo-della-vitamina-D.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Metabolismo-della-vitamina-D.png 482w, https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Metabolismo-della-vitamina-D-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sub><em>Figure 1. Vitamin D metabolism<\/em><\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Vitamin D exists in two main forms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vitamin D\u2082 (ergocalciferol):<\/strong> of plant origin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vitamin D\u2083 (cholecalciferol):<\/strong> of animal origin or synthesized in the skin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After dietary intake or cutaneous synthesis, both forms are converted in the liver into <strong>25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D)<\/strong>, the storage form and the main biomarker of vitamin D status.<br>Subsequently, in the kidneys, 25(OH)D is hydroxylated to <strong>calcitriol (1,25(OH)\u2082D)<\/strong>, the biologically active form.\u00b3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitamin D\u2083 is naturally found in fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, herring), cod liver oil, and egg yolk. However, dietary intake alone is often insufficient to meet daily requirements, making vitamin D supplementation a common and effective strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vitamin D Deficiency: Causes <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) <\/strong>is defined by serum 25(OH)D concentrations below 20 ng\/mL (50 nmol\/L), while levels between 21 and 29 ng\/mL indicate insufficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Common causes include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Limited sun exposure (indoor lifestyle, northern latitudes, winter season)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low dietary intake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intestinal malabsorption (celiac disease, Crohn\u2019s disease)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aging, which reduces cutaneous synthesis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obesity, leading to sequestration of vitamin D in adipose tissue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, it is estimated that over <strong>one billion people<\/strong> are affected by vitamin D deficiency, particularly the elderly and those living in regions with limited sunlight exposure.\u2074<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vitamin D and Muscle Function<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/vitamin-d-and-calcium-differences-and-benefits-for-bone-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its role in bone health<\/a>, vitamin D exerts important biological effects on <strong>skeletal muscle tissue<\/strong>. <strong>Muscle weakness<\/strong> is a well-documented clinical symptom in individuals with vitamin D deficiency, often associated with <strong>reduced physical performance and an increased risk of falls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skeletal muscle cells (myocytes) express <strong>vitamin D receptors (VDRs)<\/strong>, through which calcitriol exerts its biological activity. Statins, widely prescribed for cardiovascular prevention, can cause muscle-related adverse effects \u2014 such as pain, cramps, or weakness \u2014 in approximately 10\u201320% of patients.\u2077 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several studies suggest that <strong>vitamin D deficiency may predispose<\/strong> individuals to statin-induced myopathy by worsening muscular function.
