Increased iron requirements, combined with physiological blood loss, may expose many women to the risk of <strong>iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy<\/strong>, with potential consequences for physical well-being, quality of life, and recovery following childbirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, the availability of effective and well-tolerated strategies that can be used throughout the entire <strong>pregnancy\u2013postpartum continuum<\/strong> represents an important clinical need, as we discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmanutra.it\/en\/iron-maternal-health-imcid-2025-interview-giuseppe-gullo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an interview with Dr. Giuseppe Gullo, gynecologist and representative for the P.M.A. Center at the AOOR Villa Sofia Cervello in Palermo.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clinical evidence in the postpartum period: the study published in <em>BMC Pregnancy And Childbirth<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A multicenter observational study published in 2023 in the international journal <em>BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth<\/em> evaluated the efficacy of <strong>Sucrosomial\u00ae iron<\/strong> in the recovery from mild to moderate iron deficiency anemia during the postpartum period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, entitled <em>\u201cSucrosomial\u00ae iron effectiveness in recovering from mild and moderate iron deficiency anemia in the postpartum period\u201d<\/em>, was conducted by <strong>Dr. Edu Antoine<\/strong> and involved <strong>57 women diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia within the first hours after delivery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants were treated according to the severity of anemia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mild anemia (Hb 9\u201311 g\/dL):<\/strong> 30 mg\/day of Sucrosomial\u00ae iron for 60 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Moderate anemia (Hb 7\u20139 g\/dL):<\/strong> 60 mg\/day for the first 10 days, followed by 30 mg\/day for the remaining 50 days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary objective was to assess the increase in hemoglobin levels, while secondary endpoints included symptom resolution and treatment tolerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practical terms, the study evaluated whether Sucrosomial\u00ae iron could support recovery from postpartum anemia in a rapid and well-tolerated manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Findings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mean hemoglobin increase:<\/strong> +3.6 g\/dL after 60 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resolution of anemia:<\/strong> 81% of women were no longer anemic at the end of follow-up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Early response:<\/strong> clinical improvement observed within the first 10 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Excellent tolerability:<\/strong> no treatment discontinuations due to gastrointestinal adverse events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, the majority of participants recovered adequate iron levels without clinically relevant side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More recent evidence in pregnancy: SABM 2024 Poster<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional insights come from a <strong>prospective observational study<\/strong> presented as a poster at the <strong>2024 Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM)<\/strong> held in Phoenix, USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, entitled <em>\u201cEfficacy of Sideral\u00ae Folic supplementation in pregnancy: a feasibility study\u201d<\/em>, coordinated by <strong>Dr. T. Sena and colleagues<\/strong>, evaluated the effect of daily supplementation with <strong>Sucrosomial\u00ae iron (SiderAL\u00ae Folico)<\/strong> in pregnant women who were non-anemic or mildly anemic at the beginning of gestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study design and main outcomes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Daily supplementation from the beginning of pregnancy until delivery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hemoglobin levels remained stable<\/strong> throughout the entire gestational period<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prevention of hemoglobin decline<\/strong> and iron deficiency anemia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited peripartum hemoglobin loss<\/strong> (mean \u22120.4 g\/dL)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No need for intravenous iron therapy or blood transfusions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Progressive improvement in maternal well-being<\/strong>, including fatigue, mood, sleep quality, and restless legs syndrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In practical terms, supplementation helped women maintain adequate iron status and overall well-being throughout pregnancy.
